In my yoga teaching, especially during retreats, I love weaving in the wisdom of Ayurveda to complement the practice of Iyengar Yoga. Often described as yoga’s sister science, Ayurveda is an ancient Vedic tradition that invites us to observe ourselves and the natural world as a way of finding balance.
What draws me to Ayurveda is its deep respect for individuality. Instead of a one-size-fits-all approach, it honours our unique constitutions—our Prakriti—and encourages simple, supportive practices that align with our own rhythms and needs. Combined with the grounding and precision of Iyengar Yoga, the complementary teachings of Ayurveda enrich the practice.
Improved Digestion
Ayurveda places great importance on proper digestion as a foundation of good health. By following Ayurvedic dietary guidelines and choosing foods that suit your dosha, you can improve your digestion, reduce bloating, and enhance nutrient absorption.
Enhanced Energy
An Ayurvedic diet and lifestyle can help you maintain consistent energy levels throughout the day. By eating in harmony with your dosha, you can avoid energy spikes and crashes.
Weight Management
Ayurveda offers natural and sustainable weight management strategies. By understanding your dosha and the types of foods that suit your constitution, you can achieve and maintain a healthy weight.
Strengthened Immunity
Ayurveda emphasizes building a strong immune system. A balanced diet, along with specific herbs and practices, can help boost your body's natural defense mechanisms.
Stress Reduction
Ayurveda promotes relaxation and stress reduction through practices like meditation, yoga, and mindfulness. These techniques can help you manage stress and improve mental well-being.
Prevention and Management of Health Conditions
Ayurveda provides guidance on preventing various health conditions and managing chronic diseases. By addressing the root causes and imbalances in your body, you can reduce the risk of health issues.
