Yoga Mentoring

Iyengar Yoga Mentoring

Becoming an Iyengar Yoga teacher is a gradual process of practice, study and personal development. It is not simply about learning to teach postures, but about deepening your understanding of yoga and learning how to share it with clarity, care and confidence.

As a Level 3 Iyengar Yoga teacher and approved mentor, I support experienced students who are ready to explore the path towards teaching.

Mentorship Pathway

Before beginning mentorship, you should have attended regular Iyengar Yoga classes for at least three years and developed a good foundation in the Level 1 asanas.Mentorship is usually undertaken with a teacher who knows you and your practice well. If you are interested in training, the first step is an open conversation about your experience, motivation and readiness. The mentorship period lasts for a minimum of three years, although everyone develops at a different pace. Readiness for assessment is determined individually and cannot be rushed.

Learning Through Practice and Experience

Mentorship combines personal practice, study, observation and practical teaching experience. As a trainee, you will:

  • Attend regular intermediate-level classes with your mentor
  • Develop your personal practice of asana and pranayama
  • Observe and assist in beginner-level classes
  • Learn how to demonstrate, explain and adapt postures
  • Receive regular feedback and guidance
  • Complete practical and written assignments
  • Study yoga philosophy, anatomy and physiology
  • Explore safe, inclusive teaching and class management
  • Attend workshops and learn from more senior teachers
  • Keep a record of your practice, study and training

As your experience develops, you will gradually take a more active role in class and begin practising your teaching under guidance.

“Confidence, clarity and compassion are essential qualities of a teacher.”
— B.K.S. Iyengar

Mentoring journey

The pathway follows the syllabus and requirements established by the Ramamani Iyengar Memorial Yoga Institute in Pune and administered in the UK by Iyengar Yoga (UK). After completing the required period of practice and mentorship, trainees may be put forward for the Level 1 teaching assessment. This includes assessment of both personal practice and teaching.Qualifying is an important milestone, but it is not the end of the journey. Iyengar Yoga teachers continue to study, practise and undertake professional development throughout their teaching lives.

Is Mentorship Right for You?

You do not need to have made a definite decision about teaching before contacting me. You may simply feel ready to deepen your practice and learn more about the pathway.

If you have at least three years of regular Iyengar Yoga experience, we can begin with an informal conversation about your practice, motivation and readiness.
